WAIT, WTF is a TOG and why is it important to a baby monitor?!

If you’re new around here, we get it. We’ve been there. No, but really, what does TOG mean?

Think of TOG as a rating of warmth. TOG (rhymes with ‘dog’) stands for ‘Thermal Overall Grade’ and is a simple measurement to tell you how thick and warm your baby's sleepwear is. Just like you use ‘Fill Power’ or GSM to gauge the warmth of the comforter on your bed, TOG is the equivalent measure of warmth for the clothes and wearable blankets your baby will wear for sleep.

TOG’s come in different ‘ratings’. The rating is typically a number, and that number indicates the warmth factor of the fabric. (At ergoPouch, these range from 0.2 to 3.5 TOG).

To make your life a little easier (because newborn life is no joke), we've popped our cute little What to Wear Guide (famous in its own right) into our Monitor.

This means, at the click of a button, the monitor will read the room and tell you what combination of TOG-rated pouches and layers to dress your baby safely for sleep, based on the current room temperature.

Neat, huh?

No Wi-Fi, no worries

Drift Home is Wi-Fi free, meaning it uses radio frequencies to connect the camera and monitor, instead of a Wi-Fi connection.

Private and secure
Drift Home does not use Wi-Fi to prioritise your family’s privacy and safety from hackers.

Reduced exposure to EMFs
The use of radio frequency also reduces your family's exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Drift Home operates on a digital RF 2.4GHz' frequency, a low level of non-iodised radio EMF's that is considered safe and not harmful to your family's health.

Hands (and distraction) free Monitoring
As Drift Home only uses the supplied monitor unit to show real-time video of your baby (and not a smartphone app), your hands and eyes are free to do other things while you monitor your sweet baby.

ergoPouch Drift Home Baby Monitor and Smart TOG Guide displaying the room temperature and appropriate sleepwear

Confused?
We got you.

What is a Smart TOG Guide?

  • The Drift Home Baby Monitor unit has an in-built temperature gauge which not only enables you to know the room temperature, but also what to dress your baby in for sleep time.
  • On the front of the monitor there is a quick access button to the Smart TOG Guide. Pressing this button will bring up a clear picture display that will tell you what TOG-rated sleepwear to dress your baby in for sleep, based on the current room temperature reading on the monitor. The recommendation is based on both TOG recommendation and garment type you should dress your baby in.
  • The Smart TOG guide recommendations follow the ergoPouch ‘What to Wear Guide’ system and is intended for use with ergoPouch’s TOG-rated products only.

What is a TOG, and why do I need this recommendation in my Baby Monitor?

  • A TOG (‘Thermal Overall Grade’) is a unit of measurement for warmth and insulation in baby sleepwear. For safe sleeping, a baby or infant cannot have loose blankets in the sleep environment, so we dress them in wearable blankets (or sleeping bags, as they’re commonly known) to keep them warm during sleep. These wearable blankets come in different thicknesses/warmth ratings, or TOGs.
  • The higher the TOG number, the warmer the garment is. You would choose a TOG based on the room temperature the baby is sleeping in. Many parents find it tricky to match their room temperature to their sleepwear – this baby monitor takes the guesswork out of dressing baby warmly and safely for sleep by telling you exactly what TOG combination to dress baby in.

Does the Drift Home unit use Wi-Fi, or have a smartphone app?

No, the Drift Home unit does not come with Wi-fi connectivity or an app. The monitor and camera connect using a type of digital radio frequency called FHSS technology (‘Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum'). Digital FHSS transmits radio frequencies on a digital RF 2.4GHz, by switching the carrier frequency rapidly within a specific band. This wireless technology is secure, robust, and the non Wi-Fi connection makes it more resistance to hacking and interference. We choose to use no WiFi to protect the privacy and safety of your family, for a secure connection with your baby that only YOU can see.

What kind of sound detection does Drift Home have?

  • The Drift Home Baby Monitor uses VOX sound detection (‘Voice Operated Exchange’) technology. When baby cries or makes a noise, the paired monitor will be activated and the sound will be heard through the monitor. A visual icon will also appear on screen to alert you.
  • The VOX sensitivity can be adjusted to what level of sound you want to be alerted to (e.g. softer whimpers or sleeping noises, or full crying), and there are 7 levels of volume control on the monitor.

Does the monitor unit display in colour, and have a night time mode?

  • Yes for day time mode, or when lights are on in a room, the vision will display in full colour.
  • Drift Home also has Auto Night Vision – with 2 metres of clear black and white vision in them room (up to 6 metres total night vision). Auto Night Vision uses invisible infrared LED to protect babies’ eyes at night.
  • There are 8 level of brightness control on the monitor.

Can I talk to my baby through the monitor, or play sound to my baby?

  • Yes, the Drift Home Baby Monitor has a 2-way talk back function. This can be used to help sooth a newborn baby with your voice without needing to go into the room, or talk to your older child when needed.
  • The Drift Home Baby Monitor comes with 5 soothing and calming soundtracks  – the tracks can be accessed via the paired monitor unit, or via the camera unit manually. The five soundtracks included are Rainforest, Ocean, White noise, Heatbeat and Fan. These tracks are the popular tracks also included in our Drift Away Portable White Noise Machine (sold separately).

How is Drift Home powered?

The monitor is rechargeableand comes with a USB-C charging cord and adaptor. The camera is plug-in only.

Is Drift Home travel friendly?

Yes, the Drift Home Baby Monitor is travel friendly, and can be packed up easily when required. The 300 metre range and rechargeable monitor makes it ideal for travel.

What is the range of Drift Home?

The Drift Home Baby Monitor has up to 300 metres of coverage, depending on your house, other outside or inside interference, wall types and thickness.  This means that you can be up to 300 metres away from your baby sleeping, and still receive a strong signal to the monitor, making it ideal for large houses, and travel.

Does Drift Home come with any alarm setting or alert features?

  • Yes, Drift Home Baby Monitor comes with feeding, nappy change, room temperature, and sound alarms and alerts. These can all be customised to your preferences.
