How to Use the Convertible Cotton Quilt

Learn how to transition from cot to bed with the Convertible Cotton Quilt

The Convertible Cotton Quilt is a unique year round quilt suitable for toddlers and preschoolers transitioning out of their cot, as well as kids transitioning to big beds. The Convertible Cotton Quilt comprises two TOG rated halves that zip apart for use in a cot (Demi size), and zip together to create a standard sized quilt for use in a bed. The Demi half can be used from 2 years of age for blanket training in the cot (configured as a toddler bed/with one side off) or on a cot mattress on the floor, along with our Organic Toddler Pillow. Watch our video above to learn how to use the Convertible Cotton Quilt, or follow the steps below.

How to Use the Convertible Cotton Quilt

1. Choose between the Light (3.5 TOG) or Warm (7.0 TOG) half. Light is recommended for room temperatures of 21ºC or more. Warm is recommended for room temperatures of 20ºC or less.
2. For a cot from 2 years of age: If starting with the Single quilt; unzip the Quilt and choose the appropriate TOG-rated half. If starting with the Demi quilt; simply choose the appropriate TOG-rated half.
For a single bed:
Fasten two demi halves together to form a standard single quilt. Choose the appropriate TOG-rated half to cover your child's body.
3. If the night starts out warm, use the Light half over your child's body. As the night cools, turn the quilt to use the Warm half.
4. If your child soils the bed, unzip and wash the soiled half only. Machine wash and tumble dry on low to maintain loft. (Tip: Have a spare Demi on hand when one Demi is in the wash.)
5. Add a quilt cover if desired.

Convertible Quilt TOG ratings

Our Convertible Cotton Quilt comprises different TOG-rated halves that zip together or apart for use in the cot and big bed.

The Light Half is rated as 3.5 TOG and 350GSM and is recommended for room temperatures 21ºC or more. The Warm Half is rated as 7.0 TOG and 500 GSM and is recommended for room temperatures 20ºC or less.

The Single Size quilt is designed for year-round use, with a light half and a warm half. The Demi / Cot Size is available for purchase in both light and warm weights, and features zips down both sides, so that it can later be connected to another Demi Quilt to become full-size quilt suitable for a single bed.

What’s the difference between TOG and GSM ratings in bedding?

TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and it is a unit of measurement for insulation and warmth of sleepwear and bedding.

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre and is a unit of measurement of the weight and density of a fabric.

When comparing quilts of different fabrication, it is better to compare TOG ratings than GSM, as fibres trap and distribute heat differently to each other. It may confuse some parents that 3.5 TOG is the warmest TOG rating on our sleeping bags and sleep suits, but the coolest TOG rating on our Cotton Quilts. This is because a sleeping bag traps body heat much more efficiently and therefore keeps your child warmer than a quilt which allows more airflow.
